Fame, pride, honour and money…

The footballers on the picture above are preparing for a match of the African Champions League. Esperance de Tunis from Tunesia against the Simbas (Swahili for Lion) of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There are rumours about 50,000 people watching the game that has been relocated to Mwanza, the town at the shore of Lake Victoria, far away from Dar es Salaam. However, the supporters boarded the train which takes three days and gathered in the Kirumba Stadium to be part of this instance of national pride. Because that is what this game is all about. Pride, fame and honour. That is why the footballers from Tunesia have made the ridiculously long way (almost 5000 km) to Tanzania.

In the meantime in Europe: the Champions Leageu final today is not only about winning or losing the most important title in Eurpean football. It’s about money. A lot of money. Of course, it’s also about finding out which is the best team of the continent. However, the salary of one single player of Europe’s best team would be more than enough to purchase the entire best team of the black continent.
