The magazine of the local newspaper “Tages-Anzeiger” has just published an essay about the beauty of cycling. The author celebrates the bicycle as the new status symbol of our modern society that is defining a sustainable lifestyle as trendy, cool, hip, modern per se, I don’t know what… He even phantasizes about the bicycle replacing the car as the status symbol of human beings. Who knows? Let’s hope he is right.

Whilst we are enthusiastically phantasizing about a time in which a nice bike is as highly appreciated by society as a big car, Africa has already reached this stage of history. In Tanzania the bicycle is a very important status symbol. Of course, a car is even more prestigeous, but who could afford a car?  What does that all mean? Is Africa more progressive? Is history going in circles? Will all the bicycles in Africa soon be replaced by cars before they will be replaced by bicycles again as it happens now in Europe?
